On the Kennet
After having sorted out a trip which included fishing the
Test and the Frome before heading for the Kennet, with Reg, Chris Y and Kev,
after all the rain and floods, the Kennet was the only water fishable.
Even the Kennet was full and our hopes of perch fishing were
out but I had to have a day trotting which I really enjoy. However, fishing a
trout river with worm and maggot resulted in lots of unwanted trout so I moved
to the carrier. Here I caught chub too before Gary, the keeper suggested I try another
carrier which had dried out in the past but prior to that had offered excellent
sport.
In just a short while I had caught chublet, roach and small
chub, but just before I packed up a small perch that I caught was taken by a
large one which ejected it at the net.
However, I have to comment that the tea wallah forgot to
bring the tea. This will seriously danmage his street cred among tea
officiados.
We agreed to meet up a couple of weeks later before the end
of the season. However, Chris and I screwed up dates as organisation isn’t our
strengths and he arrived on the Monday, and I turned up on the Wednesday!!
I went straight to the carrier where I caught the fry before
and fished it with a light rod, a shot lurching the bait down and was delighted
with the results. Initially the maggots were consistently tapped by small fish,
so changing to double worm bought better results.
Over the course of the day I managed 4 perch over 1.5lb with
the best being 2-14 which is my PB – from a tiny carrier fishing like a
schoolbay.
A great way to end the season.
