Although Lacock on the Bristol Avon is small and fairly heavily fished, it is a favourite place of mine because of the beautiful setting. With Lacock Abbey as a backdrop and fields all around, it is a delightful place to go, even if you don't catch anything.
After buying my day ticket in the local Post Office, I stated fishing in the Abbey field at about 1.30pm and gradually worked my way upstream peg by peg. I often fish these small rivers in the way as I find it more productive, but really struggled here initially. The river was falling after recent rain but still coloured so I thought it would be good fishing, but in the first couple of hours all I caught was an eel of just over 1lb. Whilst I don't enjoy catching eels, I am pleased to see a few being caught at last; perhaps this will restore the equilibrium between otters, fish and fishermen.
I then settled down in the swim by the telegraph pole, scale down a bit to a size 6 with spam, and loose fed with corn. This brought the fish on and I swiftly caught a chub of 4lb 6oz. I've had chub to 4lb there in the past but nothing over much. After taking the photo, I settled back in and had another a few minutes later of 4lb 12, then 4lb 2oz. A nice trio. It then quietened down for a while and I alter caught another couple either side of 3lb, but alas, no barbel. However, you can't be disappointed with such a catch and as dusk fell, I packed away, leaving my glasses behind, and drove into Bristol to pick Sandy up.
She gave the concert rave reviews so if you get the chance to see them, make sure you go.
