Fishing to Music - 27/06/10

We had a couple of hours to spend whilst Sandy had her guitar lesson, so she dropped us off at Bude. I fancied trying for mullet, but Lee preferred trying for bass.

Initailly, Lee tried fly fishing but missed the takes that developed on pink flies so changed to lobworm and was quickly into a fish of just a few ounces. My start was using bread flake fished over mash with minimal results until I watched one taking bits off the surface. I quickly changed to floating crust and caught a nice mullet of just over 2lbs - they do fight really well, especially on coarse fishing tackle.

This spooked the rest of the mullet for a while, but Lee continued to catch bass to nearly 1lb until he ran out of worms.

By this time, Sandy reappeared with a picnic and her guitar to serenade us. We spotted the prawns that she had bought and suggested we try them for bait. They certainly brought very sharp takes which we continued to miss until I eventually caught another mullet of just over 1lb. These fish are very quick and extremely sensitive to any resistance and readily spit the bait out if suspicious, although they didn't seem to mind Sandy's playing.
