I managed to slip out for an hour or two as I fancied
catching a chub, I hadn’t caught one in a while.
I decided to fish a spot that I haven’t been to for a couple
of years, the River Culm. This is a small overgrown river that ultimately flows
in to the River Exe, and when I say overgrown, I mean it. There were large stretches where you couldn’t
get a line in because of the brambles along the bank and trees overhanging the
river. If you look at the photograph below you can’t even see the river as I
play the better fish.
Having had the foot of my centre pin fixed by Garry Mills of
Mill tackle, I decided the best approach would be to drop the bait in the holes
and let it run downstream feeling for the bites. The river was also up and very
coloured to make it just a little bit harder.
I was quickly rewarded with this lovely fish, but then went
a while without a bite so I changed tactics and used an old coffin lead to pin
the bait in one place, and cast it in the space between the trees catching a
smaller chub of about a pound and a half before heading back home to watch the
rugby.
