I am a very lucky angler because I enjoy nealy all types of fishing. So after fishing for mahseer and trevally, I looked forward to fishing for roach with fine lines, even though it would have to be on a stillwater as the close season is in force on my preferred rivers. I know of several anglers who can no longer fish in the UK after getting hooked on the excitement of fishing overseas, but to me, it is all fun
I popped along to my local reservoir, Darracott, late in the afternoon, with my float tackle and centre pin and a small pot of sweetcorn as the cold easterly wind has switched to south west. Even though this caused a decent ripple, I persevered with a float and managed a few smaller roach and rudd to about half a pound. Then, as I was chatting to another angler who was sitting next to me, my float slid away and I struck into solid resistance. I knew straight away that it was a carp; I had hoped to avoid these by fishing in colder times and despite using 4lb line (I won't fish lighter because I often hook carp) I was able to land a carp of between 8 and 9lb. I find playing better fish is more conrollable on light tackle with a centre pin as the feel makes for more control (and I have taken them a lot larger than this on 4lb line). This disturbance put the roach off the feed and after catching a bream of around 2lb, I packed up and went home for tea with my equilibrium restored.
