Indian Summer at Darracott - 05/09/12

As the weather outside was sunny, I decided to shut the shop on Wednesday (hald day closing)for a spot of fishing at the local reservoir.  I had promised Sandy that I would paint the bathroom before I went out which was therefore achieved in record time allowing me to go to the reservoir at tea time.

It was such a joy to set up in just a sweater and float fish in the shallows having the corner of the pool to myself.  Loose feeding with corn I gradually got bites from roach and roach/bream hybrids which were beautiful fish with red fins that all fought like roach.

I was using a size 10 as I didn’t want to catch fish too small to get the hook in their mouths. When I switched to spam, the bite rate increased although they proved difficult to strike into. The majority were probably smaller fish, but the average size of fish caught increased with bream to 3lb, and as the light fell the rudd came onto the feed, all 12oz to  1 lb, and all really beautiful.

What a fabulous session, although the fish weren’t huge they did put a bend in the rod whilst sitting in the long overdue sunshine. I’m not normally a stillwater angler but I realty enjoyed this much needed session.
